Show was 2 hours & 55 minutes
(Thanks Sascha, Dennis, Henne, Nico, Lars)
once again, i got from spain to this beautiful
country where fortunately everyone speaks english, not like spain...
first of all, my eternal gratitude to my dear
friend sven, (a perfect host)...
hamburg was defenetely one of the best shows
in the tour so far...defenetely much better than the shows the band
did in spain, which is a logical thing, because
the songs have evolution as long as the tour goes on...
i think this tour is becoming a kind of prayer
tour or wish tour, with same exact setlist every night, and only
eventual little changes, which is rather shit
when you are attending 20 cure shows in 5 months...
...but, if it is the band decision... so...
i respect it... let's just hope nice surprises for the show in wembley
where
they might take new songs into the set...
please, anyone in the band reading? could
you please get "last dance", "the holy hour" and "the baby screams"
into the setlist for wembley...
only a couple of always constructive critics...the
main set is very, very long.. too long..."end" and "39" should
never be played together, they are played
a way that seems to be the same song for 14 minutes...
We arrived in Hamburg at 6.30 . The first thing
we saw were some fucking ticket-sellers were ripped off by some
policemen. This is a good start for a Cure
show anyway!!!
There were nearly 7000 people in the Sporthalle
and during my second beer noticed the lovely classical intro.
The crowd was really nervous at this time
and a few minutes later they all went mad ! The lights turned off and
the band entered the stage . Roger was first
followed by Robert , Simon and Perry.
Out of this world - I only remember the first
notes of Perry´s guitar and Robert´s vocals then tears ran
trough my
eyes cause the Swing Tour was so long ago
and the Festivals were not as good as they should have been ( I hate
Festivals). The Sound was wonderful and Robert
looked really relaxed!
Watching me fall- Now i was back and the song
was much better than on CD really powerful.
Want- My favourite song on the WMS very good!
Fascination Street-good as ever
Open - it has not the depth of the Wish Tour(Porl
is missing and Roger could´nt reach it)but eight years later
Robert sings it very good
Loudest Sound-nice slow note in this strong
set
The Kiss- The first highlight with the Lips
on the screens. You´re back in 87
Maybe someday- Perry did a great job!
Shake dog Shake- Very powerful and extremely
well played just wonderful
Deep green sea-strong as ever with a nice
jam from Robert and Perry at the begining
In between days- heard it so many times and
it will be good as ever
Siamese Twins - first real surprise and really
good rehearsed!
Prayers for rain - Robert has problems with
the raaaaaiiiin note !He was screaming not singing ( His voice gets
older with smoking and drinking)but still
good!!!
100 Years - lovely lights and the best version
i´ve ever heard!
End- something is missing (I think it´s
Porl)
39- very well rehearsed .Perry and Simon did
a great job
Bloodflowers-It has not the intensity than
on CD but the song is always powerful and good
M-17 seconds
Play for today-the crowd was clapping and
it was good fun for Robert
Just like Heaven - another real good version
just falling in love!!
A Forest- fast short good , but i love the
long versions
There is no if - much more intense than on
CD
Trust-Uhhh much better than on the Wish Tour.
Just to hold your girlfriend! Wonderful version and Robert
enjoyed it very much
Plainsong- shivers ran down my neck -PERFECT-
This is the song i will play on my marriage . Robert stood just
behind the speakers and looked at me with
this "lost "look then there was something between smiling and crying
on his face , just perfect! You could notice
that he wants to thank everybody who was there at this moment but he
can´t!
Disintegration-some problems with his voice
but he did a great end
Faith - yeah with the 6-string-bass and different
vocals at the end then he had to go and it seemed , that he will
play another three hours!Thank you ,thank
you and good night and then he was waving...
That´s it! One of the best Cure concerts
has finished! There was no big variing in this Gig but it was a real perfect
Cure show and you could see it in some peoples
eyes that this was the last show they could attend to! They
just looked at the stage and realized that
the Dream has ended. All in all a really good show but i think only
Robert enjoyed it that much as we do. Roger
looked very boring and Simon and Perry only did their job!
Looking forward to Oberhausen
This dream never ends you said...
I have read a few of the other reviews of this
show, and I must agree totally with Sascha and Dennis....the show
was good, but not quite as exciting as say
Munich. That is my opinion. I am not claiming to be an expert, as
Sascha mentions, but I have seen about 40
live Cure shows in my time. Echoing Dennis' comments...I felt that
the 2nd encore was too mellow and lost alot
of the drive and excitement that had built up during the course of the
show. I also felt the crowd was not
rewarded for their spirit and energy. The setlist was basically the
same (again)
as the previous shows.
The stadium/concert hall was smaller than in
Stuttgart and Munich, and this time it was sold out and packed to
the brim. The only free space was behind
the soundboards or in the aisles of the seated section. The crowd was
dressed in darker colors than the crowds in
Stuttgart and Munich. Does where you live influence what you
wear???? I say yes!
I will also say that if you ever go to Germany, be sure to make Hamburg a stop. It is absolutely a gem of a city.
After seeing 2 shows already, the novelty has
worn off a little, and I have grown to expect the best. I just didn't
feel the Hamburg show was as good as it could
have been.
Having said that, the first 6 songs were the
same as previous shows, and I felt that Want sounded excellent on
this night. It is funny how the same
songs can sound totally different on any given night. Fascination Street
was
also good as well.
Robert then proceeded to say...this next one
is off the KMKMKM album and it is called the Kiss. This, in my
mind was the best song of the night.
It was sooo intense with the screaming guitar effects and it seemed to
last
forever. I was amazed that they chose to play
this in the first place. It was a real treat to hear this and it was
played fantastically.
2 songs later, we got Shake Dog Shake (as in
Stuttgart) and was a real crowd pleaser. Edge of a Deep Green
Sea for me is always a great song to hear
live, and they didn't let me down this time either.
Siamese Twins was played, and again I was enraptured
in this tune, as I was with Prayers for
Raaaaaaaaaiiiiiinnnnnn.
The last 3 songs of the first set were again
the same. I am surprised that they play so many songs with the
same spacey guitar sound during the first
set. For example, I think they could have played something a bit
differently instead of End.
The first encore was great as before, with M being my favorite. A Forest was not as exciting this time 'round.
I really was let down with the second encore....nice
to hear the tunes, but too slow and kind of a buzz-kill if you
know what I mean......where was 10:15 Sat
night and Killing an Arab???? This is where they normally come!!!
Or how about Charlotte Sometimes or A Night
Like This?? That would have brought the roof down. Oh well....
Finally Faith was, and always is one of the best songs you will hear by the Cure.
Overall, as I mentioned before, it was a good
concert....I am just really spoiled and wanted to hear more diversity
in their setlists....hell I know they can
do it, they know over 80 songs.
I'll just have to count on them changing the sets in the US.
First of all I would like to say that the other
reviews of the Hamburg show - especially Dennis - are absolutely
right in their opinions. It was a real good
show BUT also a bit boring in some parts of it. It's okay that the band
got several songs as a part of each show that
they play every night to have something like a corpus.(the so-called
A-set) But the B-set who is supposed to give
some change to the whole thing is too much static. 37 Songs in total
during 15 concerts is not what we all would
have expected after reading the setlists of the first two shows as the
Dream Tour kicked off.
As I went to the Promo Show in the Markthalle
in february, it was a pleasure to see them perform such wonderfull
new songs and the real good old stuff. Now
after seeing two shows (Berlin and Hamburg) of the Dream Tour who
were nearly the same (they have just changed
snakepit/the kiss) I'm not so enthusiastic like in february.
Before the concert started I could take a
look on the second paper of the setlist (which was lying on the
soundboard) with the encores on it.(1st Encore:
All cats are grey, The drowning man, Faith / 2nd Encore: M, Play
for today, Just like heaven, A forest / 3rd
Encore: Sinking(?), Plainsong, Disintegration)
Obviously I expected an extraorinary, great
& wonderfull show. Unfortunately (take a look on the setlist) they
changed the encore-setlist although there
were such a real good atmosphere and the audience was really steaming,
shouting, clapping and went crazy during some
songs. So I don't understand why they decided to play the same
encores (in different order) as in Berlin.
Anyway there were some songs which were a
pleasure to hear - especially 'the kiss' (my first Cure-show was
Hamburg 1987 during the Kissing Tour), 'shake
dog shake', '100 years' and naturally: 'siamese twins'!
For those who did see just this show, it was
(or could be) a great event - but for the 'experts' it could have been
disappointing. I'm looking forward to Oberhausen,
hoping and keeping the faith that we all get some more change!
Although the setlist was nearly the same of
yesterday, this was my favourite gig of the current german Dreamtour -
nearly reaching the high level of the Madrid
Shows!
The audience was fantastic (for a german audience:-)),
Robert was acting a lot with the crowd, lightshow turned out
very well in the venue and the performance
of each member was perfect. It´s amazing, closing your eyes gives
you
the feeling of having the music from CD, but
much better!
Well, as many mentioned, they should change
the set a bit. But In Hamburg I didn´t really care, that the sets
are
rather repetitive, as it was such a great
show. So still three (Paris, Oberhausen) shows to go......
Review by Dennis
the end of a legend???
I know it is a harsh headline to start with,
but after the Hamburg show I really have my doubts... if you have only
seen one show, Hamburg will defintely stay
in your mind, best audience on the dates I have seen so far, first time
the sing-along with Roger's keyboard line
of 'play for today' was hearable and for songs like '100 years' and 'jlh'
everyone went mad, not only pushing (like
in Berlin) but creating concert atmosphere. Playing was okay, didn't
notice many mistakes. To me though, the shows
at this point of the tour seem to be more of a going-back to 'Wish'
times, where everyone played for himself on
stage, not much talk between the bandmembers, and as example if
there is not a keyboard part in some
part of a song, Roger will immediately run off stage and prefers to laugh
with
the crew.
Obviously, the show had its highlights, which
were for me a brilliant version of 'The kiss', nice 'Loudest sound' and
an excellent 'Siamese twins'.
The encores borught all the hardcore fans
down, as there were more expectations then just changing the encore
parts... the audience would have deserved
much, much more yesterday. Nice to read (courtesy of Sascha) what
they planned as encore... I don't know why
they've exchanged that, the concert started brilliant and in the end it
was just okay...
As Lars already mentioned, Roger told us they
rehearsed 49 songs for the tour, I wonder why they don't change
the set a bit more, they must realize that
people don't only go to one show, if I have a look just in the first rows,
at
least half of the people I've met at more
than 2 or 3 gigs so far... now we've had 3 concerts with almost the
same
set in a row, which is definetely getting
boring. It would be nice to hear a bit more flexibility and that would
definetely push the shows and make them the
'Dream Tour' most of us were hoping for. As always, many rumours
are circulating, I won't go into detail, but
if you take a look at the playing of the band, the improvisations that
are
missing (even 'A forest' and 'Faith' stay
the same), the not changing setlist, maybe not everything mentioned
is a
lie - my 0.02$.
I don't want to be too negative about everything,
I still have hopes for the following gigs, and maybe it is just some
show they need to get things going...
also, a quick hello to the poeple around,
that are the main reason why I still enjoy all things travelling around:
Mandy, Jan, Marc, Mary, Lars, Uyea, Franziska,
Sascha, Kati, Franziska, Patrick, Ashley, Sven... and everyone
else I met during the tour so far...
yesterday I joined the Cure gig in Hamburg.
It was a good show, not brilliant, but good. Robert acted in the way
he ever does, Simon seems to be a little bit
tired. Perry performed his guitars verry strange but perfectly.
The show was about 3 hours !! Wonderful light
effects and a lot of old and new stuff.
I just got back home from the show. It was
really cool. The band was in good mood and shape and the audience
was ok (play for today; they sang the keyboard
tunes, but it could have been louder!!) to enthusiastic (the kiss, a
forest, jlh).
The best songs for me were The Kiss (perfect;
superb guitar play by Robert and Simon ending with a hammering
bass), Watching me fall (great solos by Perry)
and One hundred years (the audience went mad, as the whole band
broke into '100 years, 100 yeaarrs,100 yyeeaarrss).
Unfortunately, the main set and even the encores
are very static. One already knows which songs will follow next
when Robert takes the accoustic guitar to
play There is no if.... The same goes with M, which is always followed
by
Play for today, jlh and A Forest.
I really don't know why they don't vary during
this tour. They have rehearsed 49 songs (Roger told us that after
the munich show), but until now they only
play 36 of them, though they do The Figurehead or Cold amongst others
during the soundchecks.
And it is also a pitty that Robert does not
play much guitar solos anymore. A Forest, One hundred years and Faith
have always got the same short length, without
any improvisation.
Before and directly after the shows, many
rumours are spreading around with some of them probably being an
answer for the above mentioned task. But I
won't mention any of them here, because no one really knows if they
are true, expect the band themselves.
Anyway, don't be bothered. Just look forward
to seeing the band. The songs they play, they play fantastic,
powerful and intensively and it is really
a pleasure listening and watching.
A review will follow. It was a bit dissapointing
because on the (encore) setlist there was also "all cats are grey",
"the drowning man" and "sinking" but they
didn't play it. And it differs only by one song for the Berlin-set! (which
I've also seen.)
