(Thanks Christian)
The Arena was sold out and the Cure started
very early. During Out of this world many people entered the venue.
I have to say that the local security staff
was a bunch of fools and idiots. I think most of them did their jobs for
the
first time !!!
Another bad thing was that there were 500
standing tickets given back and lots of fans with tickets for the seating
area wanted to change their tickets. But there
was no chance to change and inside the venue there was no chance
to get into the standing area because of the
horrible local staff!Stupid because the standing tickets were cheaper
than the seating tix. Just to show you how
bad they worked: A local security guard talked to a girl in the first row
.
After they finished talking i saw the girl
crying and the guy came to me.He said, that the girl will kill herself if
she
didn´t gets backstage ! I went to the
girl and she said to me that she only asked for a setlist! I walked straight
back to the guy and told him to give her a
setlist right after the show! The only thing asked me was :" What is a
setlist ?" Great isn´t it? Just after
Faith has finished i gave a setlist to the girl and she left screaming
and waving!
Best bits for me were The Kiss , Plainsong
and a very beautiful Trust!Looking forward to Italy.
And for everyone who hasn´t seen the
Dream Tour yet: Don´t wait any longer to see the Cure on this Top
level. These shows have all of this Prayer
Tour intensity but they were a lot more professional !
Oberhausen was the third Dream Tour show for
me, after the two opening nights in Madrid that I was able to
witness. The setting was totally different.
From the strange discothèque with palm trees in it to a huge modern
arena next to one of Germany´s biggest
shopping malls. I realized that this was actually the biggest concert that
Cure ever gave in the western part of Germany,
apart from Loreley 89, which was a festival, because in the past
years they always opted for the small Essen
Grugahalle und Düsseldorf Phillipshalle. The fact that it was sold
out
was great, too. It shows that Cure have always
a very solid fanbase in this part of the country.
But apart from the Germans, there were a lot
of French, American, English and especially Dutch people, due to
the closeness to the border. This time, I
wanted to sit and enjoy the slides and the lightshow, because I had
already done the sweating, jumping, dancing,
fainting part in Madrid. But when my girlfriend and I realized that
our seats were directly under the roof about
100 kilometres away from the stage, we went to the lower ranks
and just sat down on the stairs. During the
concert, this became very annoying, because the stewards always
came to remove us to get the stairs free,
so we had to change location a couple of times. But due to this, I had
the chance to see the show from many different
parts of the arena. The concert started quite slowly, because
Cure came on so very early, at 5 minutes past
8, about an hour before I expected. the arena was not even full
at this time, with the people streaming in
during OOTW and Watching and thus creating a very hectic
athmosphere that was distracting many people
from the show. So it was a bit difficult for me to get into the mood.
I will continue doing it the song by song
way:
OOTW: First time I saw the full show, as Madrid
didn´t feature the slides and projections. The audience filmed
from behind Jason is nice. These opening songs
are performed that perfectly sound-wise and playing-wise now, it
is unbelievable. It´s like putting in
the CD. But in the end, that´s not really what a live concert is
all about, is it? I
had some mixed feelings about this perfection.
Watching: Same thing as OOTW. It became obviuos
that this was to be a "listening" concert, not so much an
"audience-interaction"-gig. Many people sat
down, smoked some weed and closed their eyes to enjoy the music.
But inbetween songs, the applause was always
very long and warm-hearted.
Want: Some cheers of recognition. performed extremely well.
Fascination: A bit too slow. If they´re
performing it with click, than my comment is of course totally rubbish,
but
at least from my subjective point of view
it seemed slow.
Open: That was performed audibly better than
in Madrid. Roger is now allowed to roam the stage with his guitar
as well. In Madrid, he was obliged to remain
seatd behind his keyboards.
Loudest sound: From that point on it became
obvious that Oberhausen was not Paris and that we would get the
usual set again. I don´t like the song,
but one has to admit that it´s performed perfectly now, compared
to the
mess in Madrid. The slides feature persons
walking away and fit the mood of the song quite well. Robert played
six-string bass at the end, but only two notes.
I hoped for Pictures as the next song, but
Maybe someday: immediatly followed LS: Nothing
special, it´s just the song performed well. One couldn´t hear
Roger that well, and there were some discussion
on stage about that fact between Roger and Robert.
Shake dog shake: The audience loved it. Performed aggresively and well.
Sinking: That camera in the mike stand fits
the mood of the song quite well. Performed with a bit too much
routine.
From the edge: Always an audience favourite.
Inbetween: Many people getting up for the first time, at last the first song they know!
Kiss: I was so happy. That was the song I hoped
for if we would get the standard set. Robert introduced it as "a
song from the Kiss me record, it´s called
the Kiss", followed by huge cheers. It seems that many people like
this song. The performance was, well, noisy,
and very long. Robert was really trying to break some strings after
he sang his part. That was definitely one
of the high points of the set for me.
Prayers: At last performed well, after the two versions in Madrid were fuck-ups.
100 years. Strong visual experience. My girlfriend,
who isn´t that much of a Cure follower as I am, really
apreciated that "one agressive song".
End: I still think that the new versions of
End sucks and that this part of the show remains too long. One can't
complain about the performance, it was tight,
and I generally like it when bands rework older songs, but in this
case, it was nothing for me.
39: The sequencers have got so loud now in
the song, it has a totally different character than on the record. After
hearing the first bootlegs of recent Dream
Tour shows, I was prepared for it, but it still haven´t made my mind
up
what to think about it.
Bloodflowers: Absolutely beautiful.
There is no if: Well, it was the usual encores
again, but that was what I had hoped for, because they feature a lot
of songs I hadn´t heard in Madrid. Robert
in the spotlight on this one.
Trust: When this came on, there were huge cheers
of recognition from the audience. Just like the Kiss, it appears
to be many people´s secret favorite.
I like the new complementary melody Roger is doing, it adds his own style
to
that song.
Plainsong: What a song, what a lightshow! At
this concert, I finally realized what Plainsong is all about, 11 years
after first hearing it. It´s Pink Floyd
1975! And nothing bad about that. Most people sat down, closed their eyes
and got carried away on a cloud of weed...
The applause for this one was really big.
Disintegration: Well done and long. Robert
was actually doing some guitar solos here and there, so I officially
proclaim it as an "inspired" version.
M: Party time! Everybody was up on their feet.
Sadly, the guitars were a bit too low in the mix for this one, and
for M they´re so important, especially
in the end.
Play for today: The singing along of the audience
was perfectly audible. Nothing to take for granted after some
of the early German shows.
Just like heaven: Me and my girlfriend were dancing in circles on the upper rank, and I didn´t feel stupid.
A Forest: People were shouting the roof off
the venue when the first notes hit. The longest version I´ve heard
so far on the Dream tour.
Faith: If I´m not sadly mistaken, this
was clocking in after 9 minutes. Roberts impro was short, but at least
it
was there. Sadly, many people left the hall
to get to the car park on time, being disappointed that the third
encore was not Lullaby followed by Boys don´t
cry and The Lovecats.
Well, if that was to be the last concert The
Cure should give on German soil, it was a farewell of dignity. I was
happy having seen the Dream Tour again close
to my home in a really big place, so I had everything this year,
from a club to the arena to a big festival,
but that´s only to come up in July!!
When my friend Olivier and I arrived
to the Arena, we were a bit disappointed because we were not allowed to
go to the lawn (we hadn't the right tickets
...). So we had to go to sit to the place ... Could you imagine attending
of The Cure gently sitting ? It must be one
of the aspects of the german sense of organisation, you have to do
this and not that ... I know what I say, I
lived 18 years in Germany. So we sat. Happily, we weren't too far from
the stage, we had a nice view on the stage
but we were too far to see the details as we did in Lille last week.
Jason was obscured to us by the lights.
When the concert began, we were really amazed
to see that the people around us were there as if they were to a
football match (I mean soccer, for the american
people): not paying too much attention, always going to buy beers.
There was even a man on the row just beforeus
who was sleeping during the first 45 minutes ! Later, his boyfriend
playedith his cellular phone. In general,
we noticed that the audience was calm until InBetweenDays. During this
song, that the people knew better than the
other songs, they began to dance a bit ... The people in the lawn were
also particularely calm. When I remember what
I lived in Lille last week when I was trying not to fall during
FascinationStreet, 100Years or ShakeDogShake
...
This morning, as I went back to Brussels,
I heard on the german radio 1 Live a short subject on the show where
they interviewed people at the end of the
show. One of them said that there was many "tralalalala" music ! So
what that people wanted was singles and pop
songs. I can't imagine what they would have think if The Cure
played SiameseTwins or Pornography !!!
That was thus for the typically german atmosphere.
Let's speak about the music !
The show was essentially the same than in
Lille last week exept for PicturesOfYou that was replaced in
Oberhausen by TheKiss. So we were a bit deceived
not to hear SiameseTwins or a Faith or Pornography encore.
But anyway, the show was very good and the
band played very well !
I was particularely impressed by the sound
of Simon's bass, a so powerfull and clear sound. On Sinking, the bass
line was very clear, and on Faith (all the
lights red, projections of an ancient church), this sound transformed
completely the song, making it more dense
and melancolic.
The show began at 8.20PM with the now well-known
Adagio for strings of Barber and OutOfThisWorld and
finished with the last notes of Faith (Robert
sang "nothing left but faith" on and on and on ...) at 11.10PM.
The first 5 songs were played as usual, WatchingMeFall
very good (these 11 or 12 seem always so short). Perry
had since the first song problems with his
red Aria guitar, he was always kneeling to his pedal set and listening
to his amplifiers. At the beginning
of Want I didn't hear his guitar very well. During TheLoudestSound, Simon
was
looking to the projections (pictures like
in the BF booklet) on the screen behind him. ShakeDogShake was also
great, Robert singing "HAHAHA" in the beginning,
like on TheTop album.
Sinking (with the fish-eye camera) was particularely
clear and well played. I'm still not sure that End was very
good or perhaps this time the distortion of
the bass was too strong. Bloodflowers, emotionnal and beautiful as
usual ! During Plainsong, Robert walked and
came on the edges of the stage. The version of Disintigration was
very good, at the end of the final verse ("how
the end always is !"), Robert knocked his mic (I never see him do
this) and went to face his amplifiers as if
he was suddenly very sad. Disintigration is also a very emotionnal song.
The second encore was also perfect and ofcourse after that, Faith was a great end !
The band seemed to me relaxed and very happy,
Robert always smilling and talking with Roger and Simon,
Simon dancing and jumping a lot (he seemed
more happy than in Lille !). Perry seemed bothered by the problems
of his guitar. This concert was very good
and anyone (well, anyone who payed attention !) could see that The Cure
are a very good and very happy band !
For me the best songs of the set were TheKiss
(again Simon's bass with a strong distorded sound and of course
the never-ending guitar solo of Robert, the
foot on his wahwah pedal, a so powerful version of this song !), 100
Years with the projections and the strobes
lights, AForest very good and the projections of trees like in the video
clip and of course Faith !
It's decided, I will go to Werchter (in Belgium) to see The Cure once again this summer !!!
Just returning from Oberhausen I want to give
you some impressions of The Cure's performance at the Arena.
It was absolutely wonderful, fantastic, great!!!
In my opinion much better than the first Dreamtour - show I've
seen in Rotterdam, a week ago. The band were
so tight and powerful this evening. They were in a good mood,
enjoying themselves and having a lot of
fun, especially Roger who smiles quite a lot. During Plainsong Robert
went to each corner of the stage to
be very close to the fans. He seemed absorbing the whole atmosphere
knowing that this will be the last tour. It
was a moving moment which made me a gooseskin. What can I say to
the audience ? Well, Germans CAN party, if
they want to. I have never seen such an enthusiastic german
audience like that one this evening. Never
thought that it could be like that. Brilliant!!!
What else ? Best songs (for me) : 100 Years
(This Tour's version may be probably the best of all times.),
Sinking (again with the fish-eye camera),
The kiss (very intense), Shake dog shake (it rocks), the whole 2nd
encore (the audience went completely mad)
and, of course, Faith (simply beautiful and a perfect song to end
such an intense concert). Oh, not to be forgotten
: Prayers for rain with an extra-long
"Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn"
( I love that!!!).
Also we had "..hands in the air" during FTEOTDGS,
the big "football-roar" at Play for today and the also well
known clap - clap - hey at A forest. What
was wrong ? From time to time there were some problems with the
sound of the microphones. But nothing
to complain that much, I think. The sound couldn't have gone as bad
as
my neighbours' shrill whistles into my ears.
I'm nearly deaf right now.
The only thing which really pisses me off is
the static setlist during the dreamtour. (They're playing nearly the
same songs again and again and again and again
and again.) You have to be very lucky to hear songs like All
cats are grey, Drowning man, Cold, Siamese
Twins or Pornography ( I thought this is called the Dreamtour but
my dreams didn't come true. Shame on you,
guys!!) Or you have to visit the whole tour.( For me, one chance left
to hear these songs : Werchter Festival in
July. I can't await it and I'm going crazy realizing that there are 2
months left until I can see them again
and most likely for the last time in my life. Makes me very sad :-((((
)
So, concerning the setlist it was disappointing
'cause it was nearly the same as in Rotterdam and not such great
as the two nights in Paris. But the way the
songs were performed compensate it and still makes me very happy.
And to all people who are going to see them
again or to see them for the first time on this tour : ENJOY IT !!!
ENJOY IT!!! It is well worth the money and
all efforts you have to take on you to see them. Trust me.
