I was really happy to see them play Grenoble's Summum again. I saw them here already for The Prayer tour 11
years ago, so it brought back some good memories to my mind.  Gates opened at 7pm, the guest band started
shortly after 8pm for 40minutes.  They were OK but the female singer was a bit too crazy for my liking.  The Cure
invaded the stage at 9pm for what was going to be a brilliant concert.  Behind the scene were just hanged vertically
three narrow screens and a larger one on which they sometimes projected pictures and films, it didn't look like the
big structures of the Wish or Swing Tours.  All in all, the lightshow was quite nice (like on the superb and disturbing
Pornography).  I regret that Simon often faced Jason at the end of some songs to cut them short and didn't allow
Robert to fully express himself on solos (it even surprised Roberty like on the same Pornography).  Nevertheless,
this really good and approximatively 6000 capacity venue was packed (I supposed sold out, the previous day there
were just 250 tichets left) and the band seemed to enjoyed themselves.  The concert was really intense
(every song really made me shiver),the audience danced on In Between Days and Just Like Heaven, cheered out
loud for Pornography and Plainsong, waved on Trust and Sinking, to finally sing along and clap on Play For Today
and A Forest.  A Magical Night.

France, Grenoble, Summum, wednesday 05.04.  guest: My Favorite Dentist Is Dead (Trip-hop/Pj Harvey, french
band, with english speaking female singer. Not bad but not my favourite Cure guest);

Robert enters first, and while everybody takes his instrument, Perry raises his hand to say hello;
1 Out Of This World (camera placed bhind Jason);
2 Watching Me fall (Japan flag pic, Bloodflowers cover pic; "Merçi");
3 Want (strange red bottles pic);
4 Fascination street (neon lights of shops pics);
5 Open (Perry; Roger plays gtr);
6 ("Merci, (?) chanson nouvelle s'appelle") The Loudest Sound (BF TLS pic);
7 Shake Dog Shake (drawings of masks);
8 ("(?)another fucking sound, this is called") The Last Day Of Summer (from now on, Simon wears his brimeless
   cap; BF TLDOS pic);
9 (Robert plays a few chords) Maybe Someday ("Merci");
10 From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea;
11 In Between Days ("Merci");
12 Sinking (camera fixed on Robert's mic);
13 Prayers for Rain (car window under the rain film; mistake at the end);
14 One Hundred Years (b&w war pics with red and white lightshow, strange end as Simon asks Jason to stop while
     Robert is still playing);
15 End;
16 39 (fire flames film);
17 BloodFlowers (BF Rose pic;  Roger goes quickly out after the song; "Merci"; Robert walks away but faces the
     crowd once more before going out);
-break-
18 ("Merci (?) s'appelle") Siamese Twins (twins pic);
19 ("Another Pornography sound, this is called") A Strange Day ("Merci");
20 ("Finally for the Pornography section, this is") Pornography (women body parts pics; Roger goes out quickly
     again; Robert drinks and walks away saying 'bla bla bla bla' as the crowd cheers);
-break-
21 ("Merci", someone shouts something and Robert asks "What? (?) new one (?) ") There Is No If (BF TINI pic;
     it's funny to see Jason not really playing on this song but just shaking a sort of maracas);
22 (Simon gives away his mediator; Perry takes over to a secon keyboard) Trust;
23 ("Cette chanson avec passion, s'appelle") Plainsong (during the intro Robert waks on stage and says to the
     front row he can't go any further);
24 Disintegration (alas, Jason didn't always hit the center of the snare drum and it didn't sound crispy and hard
     altghough the overall song was really nervous;  at the end, as usual tonight, Roger hurrys out. "Merci");
-break-
25 ("Merci. One more 17 seconds from 17 Seconds album)  M  (letter 'M' pic);
26 Play For Today;
27 Just Like Heaven ("Thank You");
28 A Forest (not very long; trees film;once he stopped playing, Jason leans over his drumkit; "C'est tout, merci
     beaucoup" and Robert walks away his arms wide open to say the concert is over.)

This was an incredible concert, nearly 3 hours long. The whole band played very well and Robert sung extremely
well; especially on songs like Disintegration where the singing in the last verse is crucial. When the principal set
ended, I was a little afraid that the concert didn't last long. I was very wrong. The encores were amazing and the
crowd, which was rather quiet during the principal set really went crazy. Robert seemed cheerful, but not very
talkative, when I compare to the other tours I've seen. Simon was really static on stage, pushing away his usual
jumping attitude.

The OOTW-Fall beginning is, in my opinion, a little bit difficult; especially watching me fall which is long an very
difficult to hear. The show really began with Want, perfectly and very tightly played. Then great Fascination St
and Open with this rather strange bass sound, but very good. Loudest sound was OK, never been my favorite on
Bloodflowers anyway. Shake dog shake was so powerful and begun a list of very well played songs, especially
From the edge of the deep green sea which really sounded like the Wish version (the best to me), with
Perry's solo that sounded a little bit like Porl. Inbetween days at this time of the concert was great, Robert
omitted his end solo in Sinking, Prayers for rain was good although the sampled intro isn't that great.
100 Years was amazing, with Robert playing a long time after the end of the song, End is so weird with that drum
machine, I hope they will turn it down soon; 39 was very loud and Bloodflowers was great.

We got for 1st encore the Pornography one; with songs I had never seen like. All very well rehearsed and
Pornography was very powrful.The second encore was strange, beginning with There's no If with an extra rythm
that hides its original acoustic beauty, Trust was nice and the Plainsong- Disintegration part was HUGE.

Then for final encore, M was such a nice choice, Play for Today and Just like heaven burned the house down and
Forest (very short version) ended this great show.

I am going to the second night in Paris; I can't imagine what they'll do there.

Review by Sylvain

I arrived at the summum just before the opening band started their set. I thought it would be Ekova ( who opened
the Lyon 98 show ), but instead it was a band called My favorite dentist is dead. The crowd was really nice with
them and the singer thanked us for not shouting "Cure!" while they were playing.

Then The Cure walked in and started as expected with Out of this world and Waching me fall. I had been told
several times that most of the shows in this venue sounded bad, but I think most of the songs sounded very good,
except The loudest sound for which I personnaly had the impression that Roger's keyboards were out of tune. Was
it the case or was it just me?

Everyone in the first rows was really frenzied all along the show and at some point, two people who were feeling
bad were pulled out of the crowd by the security just in front of Roger, who seemed affected by this. He even
asked them if they were all right ( in French ! ) while playing. Apart from this, all the band seemed to enjoy
themselves, smiling and sometimes talking to each others and to people in the first rows.

The best moments to me were Bloodflowers - because it's Bloodflowers! -, Siamese twins - for its rarity -,
Pornography - very intense vocals and powerful images of mouths, hands and legs on the screens - , and Plainsong :
when he was not singing, Robert was smiling with his eyes closed, whispering himself words and it all looked like
f he was dancing with an imaginary person.

This was my third Cure concert  ( after Lyon 96 and 98 ) and definitely the best one I have seen so far... until the
dream comes true again in strasbourg...
