Two days later, I was at the Swiss border,
so, obviously...I had to go to Zurich. The gates opened at 7pm but
the
streets were so busy that I arrived at the
cycling ring at 8.30pm, just as Jason played the introduction of Out Of
This World. Once again the Stadion was
packed (I don't think the audience was as good as the one in Grenoble).
There was no guest, the set was almost the
same as in Grenoble, but with a version of The Kiss that was very much
appreciated. Same short end of Pornography
thanks to Simon, but a longer A Forest. I realized I appreciated
the
Loudest Sound more live than on record.
Alas, there was going to be no third encore. The worst for me is
that I
had planned to go to Stuttgart on Saturday
08.04. as well, but my car broke down so I gave up this idea
unfortunately. So that is it for this
time. But if I go to strasbourg or Marseille... Enjoy the forthcoming
concerts.
Switzerland, Zurich Hallenstadion, friday 07.04.

cap during the whole concert);

during the whole song);

a lot);
5 Open (Roger plays gtr; "Thank you");
6 ("This one is a changing mood song, this
is a new song, this is called") The Loudest Sound (during the intro,
Robert goes out for a second,
then walks over the stage to go out again, looking for something; back
of a man
pic; red-haired woman pic, japanese
flag pic, Bloodflowers cover pic; "Thank you");
7 Maybe Someday (camera on the crowd of the
first row; "Thank you");
8 Shake Dog Shake;
9 Sinking (intro Robert and Simon facing Jason;

15 end;
16 39 (Roger goes out during the intro; Robert's
gtr for this song was not ready when they started -they have had
a lot of problems
with gtrs during the whole set and technicians often had to come on stage
or took the gtrs
away- and looks desperately
backstage wondering what to do, before a technician repairs it on stage
and give
it back to Robert
for the second half of the song);

Bloodflowers ("Thank you");
-break-

again);
25 A Forest (Robert and Simon play nicely
together at the end, and the crowd clap with the last bass notes;
"Thank you, Thank
you", and Robert open his arms wide to signify it's the end);
It was our first Dream Tour show. And it was really great!
We waited for hours in front of the entrance
doors and managed to get inside the venue as the first ones. We
headed straight on to the middle of the front
row, only a few feet away from Robert. (Perhaps we need to
explain that the Zurich Hallenstadion has
an open floor without seats, you simply rush in and if you're the first
you
get the place you want. You have no numbered
rows or something like that, must be quite different from the US
shows as far as we understand all these mailings
in the past few weeks about good and bad tickets).
The crowd was a bit calm but it's always like
that in Zurich. The band knew that from the shows they played here
before (Robert said something like that in
an interview in '96) and perhaps this was the reason why
they didn't play three encores as they did
in
Toulouse or Grenoble.
The new songs are all very well rehearsed,
but something was missing compared to the older stuff. They didn't
touched us that deep although we like Bloodflowers
as an album very much. The crowd was singing along most of
the time as well but they seemed not so impressed
as they were during the older ones. And it's not only the slower
general rhythm of the new songs, the crowd
went mad to some old slow songs like Sinking or Trust. Maybe we all,
the band and the crowd, must become more familiar
with the new songs.
Absolute favourites last night were Shake Dog
Shake and The Kiss. We heard Shake Dog quite often in the past
but it's always getting better! More power
and pressure seems to be impossible. The Kiss was a dream come true.
Amazing, great, furious, can't describe. A
kind of revelation, if that didn't sound to pathetic.
The lighting was brilliant, too. Full colours,
very intense. Slides, different patterns and short movies projected to
a
big screen in the background. They even used
some mobile cameras. For one song they filmed the crowd in the first
rows. To another one they had a little fish-eye-camera
attached to Robert's microphone which gave these warped
images like the one on the Bloodflowers cover.
A special moment was the Prayers For Rain-
scream when Robert had some difficulties to hold the right tone. He
grimaced with pain afterwards and laughed
to Simon. At the beginning of 39 something with Robert's Gretsch was
wrong, I think it was a broken E-String. He
became really hectic when he realised that his guitar roadie wasn't
there. He handed his guitar to Roger who disappeared
behind the stage. Robert had to sing the first two phrases
without guitar, always turning and moving
around looking for his guitar. We never saw him walking that quick,
nearly running (can anyone of you expect Robert
running? :) ). One time he even raised his hands to the
sky to show Perry what was going on. Finally
the roadie came rushing in with the guitar right before the solo part
and Robert had to play the solo immediately
without getting the right settings.
All you babblers out there who are heading
for another Dream Tour this year can expect one of the best concerts
ever!!! In an radio review today the (most
likely ignorant) reporter said that they 'only' played all this dark and
special stuff no one wants to hear and that
the crowd was dissapointed that 'the awaited hits' like Friday or
Lovecats were missing. Ha ha! Isn't that the
best reference we can give to all you babblers out there?!
PS: Someone asked for the merchandise stuff
some weeks ago: As far as we have seen you could get five different
T-shirts: A small tight shirt in black or
white with a bloodflowers rose and 'the Cure' on the front and either the
european tour dates or something other, can't
remember, on the back. A white v-neck shirt with black long sleeves,
again the rose and 'the Cure' on the front
and something on the back. A white v-neck with the Bloodflowers cover
on the front and 'the Cure' and 'bloodflowers'
on the back and a black round neck with the band on the front and the
european tour dates on the back. They
also sold Dream Tour books, very well made. Nice photos, the "39
most important things" of each member and
so on...
We met the band before the night before the
show in the Hotel, the next day some friends were there, too.
What could be of interested for all: Roger
asked which songs they should play. One of our friends asked for
Lament and Forever but Roger answered that
they don't have these in the repertoire so far. Further on he said
that they're able to play about 60 different
Cure songs and that they probably will perform most of them for at least
one time during the Dream Tour. So we will
get some interesting setlists!
Lights, dia-show, a few videos and images (a
forest, 39, prayers for rain...), and the sound quality were just fine.
The mixing was perfect and they played quite
a few good versions like watching me fall (super guitar from Perry),
a forest (a short one but with a fair bass
from Simon), and all the Disintegration songs (excellent keyboards from
Roger in plainsong and a wonderful guitar
efect from Robert in disintegration).
I just will like to say I am happy so have
seen The Cure live one more time. It was nice to hear all those good
songs live again.
